JAMMU: Akhnoor Fort

AKHNOOR FORT

Akhnoor Fort is on bank of river chenab. The ancient name of chenab river was Asikni. 
 

HISTORY

The Akhnoor Fort was built on the earlier terraces of Harrapan period on the bank of chandrabagh river. 
Raja Tegh Singh was started construction of Akhnoor Fort in 1762 on pattern of mughal forts and cimpleted by his successor Raja Alam Singh in 1802.

At Jia Pota Ghat on bank of Chenab's river, Maharaja Ranjeet Singh crowned Maharaja Gulab Singh. The firy was repaired by Raja Gulab Singh after his coronation I'm 1822A.D . 
The fort has lofty fortification walls crowned with the battlements and having bastions of variout dimension at interval.
